Adios… Netscape!

March 1, 2008

While I personally have not used Netscape for many years now, it certainly brought in some mixed emotions in some part of my heart when I read this. Netscape – which for a long time at the start – was the face of World Wide Web is now been officially been given its final good bye by its current owner – AOL. I say ‘officially’ because it anyway had become a non-entity in the browser world for many years now.

In any regards – Adios Netscape! And for whatever it means now – Thank you!

Ever heard about a copy’left’ software license?

February 20, 2008

I had heard about copyrighted softwares. Never heard anything as copylefted software. Well just learnt that there is something as copylefted license (wikipedia link) also in the legal world.

Here is a very good primer on Legal Issues associated with Open Source and Free Software Projects – especially for techies. This just got published few days back.

I am personally of a strong opinion that these kinds of things should be taught in any Computer Science curriculum. With increasing use of open-source in the industry, I see so many technologists like myself struggling on getting the guidance associated with the legal issues associated with it. Sometimes you wish you had an access to a Lawyer at a phone-call away.

Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood

January 11, 2008

Heard about this interesting group – “Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood” (visit their website here) on MarketPlace podcasts yesterday. High time we had a campaign on this line. Full power to them!

In case you are wondering what is the big deal here or may laugh out at the work this group is trying to do, you may want to read some articles listed on the web site. The effects on kids seems to be varying from being obese, being materialistic which can lead to lower self-esteem, and decreased inability to figure out real things vs. what the corporates are trying to construct for them. But, more than all this, IMO, it is high time that the corporations realize that the power or right of impacting the kids decisions be given to their rightful owners. They are referred to as “parents”.
